What a horrible year for the Iowa State Cyclones and their fans. Living in the Big 12 Conference can’t be easy, and when you finish at the bottom of the NCAA barrel, it must be even worse. The Cyclones finished the heart breaking season at 2-10 overall and 0-8 in conference games, landing at 112th in the NCAA and dead last in the Big 12. Iowa State began the season 2-0 but then fell on a 10 game losing streak including a 12-point loss to instate rival Iowa. To make matters worse, their coach, just days after promising to stay in Ames, IA, announced he was leaving to take a job at Auburn.

After Gene Chizik left the Cyclones for greener pastures in Auburn, Paul Rhoads left Auburn to coach Iowa State, almost like a planned trade. Rhoads definitely had his work cut out for him as he arrived only to find that Chizik had already used 32 of the allotted 56 official visits the NCAA allows during a recruiting period. Not to mention the degree of difficulty telling young men the potential the Cyclones have after such a dismal season. Nonetheless, Iowa State’s new coach sees promise in his first recruiting class of 23. Two of his better players are already enrolled at Iowa State – Safety David Sims of Gainesville, Fl who signed with Oklahoma last year, but was unable to enroll because of problems with his transcript, and offensive lineman Zack Spears from Arp, Texas. Spears didn’t play much high school football but was highly sought after for his 6-foot-7 and 320-pound frame. The real issue here is what Rhoads can do for ISU football. If quality skilled players are playing in small cities like Boise, Id, and Lawrence, Ks, then why not in Ames, IA? None of the Iowa players were on the rosters of the top 10 teams in the country.

One of Coach Rhoads’ first actions was to hire Tom Herman as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and should be a great help to the struggling Cyclones. Herman spent 2 years as Rice’s offensive coordinator, where he used a spread offense and Rice ranked 10th in yards per game. Herman also previously coached at Division I-AA Texas State and Sam Houston State, and had a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Texas. These sound like good credentials – but all quarterback coaches and offensive coordinators come with good credentials. Only time will tell what the Cyclones and their staff can do.

One good thing for the new players is that due to the lack of depth and talent, many of them will be able to get early looks, and with Rhoads inheriting a 10 game losing streak, not much can be expected out of him which will allow him a chance to experiment with his line up and decide what kind of system he wants to set up. How the Cyclones will fair this season remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, they can’t do much worse.

Aion is a very complex experience, and you will have to make a number of choices in the early levels which will be critical to your later success.

Two of these relate to the character you select and create, and the way in which you select and handle your quests.

Creating Your Character

Let’s think about character creation first. It’s a very important early choice you’ll have to make which can make or break you.

In fact, your initial selection of a character may very well be the most important action you take in the game, and while the game itself is setup so that any character has a chance of being successful, I have found through experience that some characters just do better than others…in all games like these. Of course you can test your wits with weaker characters later in your Aion experience, but novice players can do with all the help they can get.

Like it or not, a weak character is going to have a difficult time surviving the Aion universe. A Priest/Cleric is going to have the toughest time getting through to level 50. They have the weakest fighting ability and the weakest fighting spells. Sure, if you want a challenge, you can try going with a Priest and see how you do.

However, if you want to give yourself a better chance of getting through this alive, you’re better off going with either a Warrior or a Mage. These are the most powerful characters in Aion. But if you put me up against a wall with a gun to my head, I’d say go with the Warrior…but not by much. The Mage has some darn powerful spells that can really kick butt at higher levels.

I will say one thing about Scouts even though they are not my first choice. A little later in the game they have the advantage of being able to use long range weapons, which means that they don’t have to get up close to their enemy to do damage. Sometimes, this alone can be a life saver.

The key, however, to any character you create is the skills that you develop. If you’re going to give yourself the best chances of surviving, I recommend weaponsmithing and armorsmithing. They say that the best defense is a good offense. Well, the best defense is also some sturdy armor that keeps swords and other nasty items from penetrating your body.

Quests and How To Complete Them

OK, you’ve got your character sorted out. Now the aim is to get yourself through the levels, quickly and effectively.

Quests are the key element of the game. Without completing them, you’re going nowhere. Here are some tips for completing quests easier.

For starters, if you’ve got the bucks, spring for the Collector’s Edition of the game. It comes with some bonus items that will make completing quests a whole lot easier. Yes, some of the items you won’t be able to use until after level 9, but once you can, you will see what a HUGE difference they make.

I can understand if you don’t want to spend more money on the game at this stage, and if you don’t want to go that route, there are other things you can do.

While they may seem unrelated to quests, Work Orders are among the most important activities in Aeon. Yet many players don’t use them anywhere near enough.

Work Orders are not quests – for a start they can be done over and over – but they will gain you experience and help you to the next level. Your character will become stronger, and more able to complete quests. Don’t ignore Work Orders.

The bad news about quests is that there are so many of them, and the in-game information about them is mimimal. At times, you can find you are spinning your wheels just trying to figure just what you have to do to complete a quest. That’s if you haven’t already fried your brain trying to work out which quest to take on.

And while it’s satisfying to get through a quest unaided, its even better to make steady progress through the levels.

Help is at hand, though it comes at a cost. It’s the Official Aion Quest Guide, and while it seems like a ripoff to buy the game and have to spend more to play it effectively, this guide is almost essential. With the guide’s help, you’ll know which quest you need to take right now, where it is, and what you have to do to complete it quickly and move on. It’s definitely worth a few bucks to gain this advantage. And no, I won’t make anything if you buy it.

Finally, and this is super important, don’t allow yourself to be distracted. Take one quest at a time and finish it before moving onto the next one. If, however, you find that you are having trouble completing a quest, go back and do a Work Order. This will give you more XP and hopefully get you up another level. There are some quests that you’re simply not going to be able to complete with weak characters.
