Create Fun and Fabulous Noahs Ark Invitations For a 1st Birthday

Sail on over two-by-two, for a Noah’s Ark Birthday party. It’s sure to be a splash, so let’s work on creating a fabulous bash! To start creating a memorable 1st birthday, here’s some ideas for Noahs Ark themed invitations.

STUFFED ANIMAL INVITES – Select small stuffed or beanie-type animals to attach your invites to. Cut 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock into four pieces. Then type or handwrite your party details in calligraphy on decorative scrapbook paper. Cut the finished piece using decorative scissors to be about 3″ x 4 1/2″. Then glue it to the back of the card stock. Decorate the corners with some Noah’s Ark stickers. Hole-punch the invite, run curling ribbon through, tie it around the neck of the stuffed animal, and hand-deliver your animal invites.

NOAH’S ARK-SHAPED INVITES – Cut an ark shape from a piece of brown card stock. Download various Noah’s Ark animals or use die-cut elephants, giraffes, monkeys, lions, lambs, etc. and place them into the ark. Write on the ark, “Beat The Flood & Join Me For My 1st Birthday Party!” On the reverse side, provide your party details.

NOAH’S ARK INVITES – Cut an 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of card stock into two pieces and fold them in half. Then download some Noah’s Ark animals or use die-cut elephants, giraffes, monkeys, lions, lambs, etc. and glue them to the front of the card stock. On the left side either type or handwrite in calligraphy:

We’re flooded with excitement and fun

As (Baby’s Name) is turning one!

The animals came 2 by 2,

Now we want to party with you!

On the right side, type or handwrite your party details on a piece of decorative scrapbook paper. Cut the finished piece using decorative scissors to about 3″ x 4 1/2″. Glue it to the right side of the card stock. Decorate the corners with some Noah’s Ark stickers. Place the invite in a colorful envelope and add a few more stickers.

ELEPHANT INVITES – Cut a large elephant head with a long wide trunk out of gray construction paper or cardstock. Glue goggle eyes to the face. Write on the trunk, “Sail On Over, Two-By-Two, To (Baby’s Name) 1st Birthday Party.” Place all the party details on the back. Then fold up the trunk in an accordion fashion and place into a colorful envelope that is embellished with Noah’s Ark stickers. If necessary, fold down the elephant ears to make your invite fit.

NOAH’S ARK PHOTO INVITES – Cut an 8 1/2″ x 11″ card stock into two pieces and fold them in half. using decorative scissors, trim the edges of a photo of your baby dressed in an animal costume, so it is slightly smaller than the card stock. Glue the photo to the front of the invitation. Put “Join Me For A Cruise On Noah’s Ark” above the photo. On a piece of textured white paper (finished size 4 1/2″ x 7 1/2″), either type or handwrite in calligraphy all of your party details and then decorate the edges with Noah’s Ark stickers.

EMBELLISH READY-MADE NOAH’S ARK INVITES – Buy ready-made Noah’s Ark invitations and embellish the picture with various colors of glitter to match the animals. Glue tiny google eyes onto some of the animals, a ribbon around the neck of an animal, or perhaps a tiny silk flower near the ear of an animal.

Bryce Harper Playing College Baseball at 17

Bryce Harper played his first college game for the College of Southern Nevada. CSV is known as the Coyotes and Harper sure has the Coyotes howling. Like Lebron James, Bryce is already called professional baseball’s chosen one. January 29, 2010 at 7:00 PM he started at a place where most “should be high school juniors” wish they could be, playing junior college baseball on the number one junior college team in the United States.

The junior college team has all starting sophomore players and then a junior in high school, which of course is Bryce Harper. Bryce is very fortunate is having one of those college sophomores as his brother Bryan. He transferred from Cal State Northridge just to play with his younger brother.

Bryce has very good power for how young he is, that is why he batted the third in his first junior college baseball game. Think about this, at the age of 17, batting 3rd, the most important spot in all of baseball, having a sold out crowd and over 100 pro scouts watching your every move. Bryce will have to deal with this pressure every game he plays until he is drafted.

With his current teammates, he did play fall baseball with them. He batted .375 with ten homeruns in those 10 fall league baseball games. You do have to remember he should only be a junior in college and he is playing with people 3 years older than he is.

With his success in high school and early success in college, Harper is expected to be the number one pick in the 2010 major league baseball draft. In the first week of June, it is projected that the Washington Nationals will be drafting Bryce Harper with the first pick. At the age of 17 he could be the number one draft pick and a millionaire! What an accomplishment if this does happen. A player and a fan drawer is what the Washington Nationals do need at the moment as they are struggling. Drafting Harper would help them a lot.

With his future in front of him and him being so young, Bryce is lucky enough to have a coach that keeps him levelheaded. Tim Chambers has helped Bryce keep his mind on the game and baseball ready. The coach of the Coyote’s has made sure that Bryce does not have interviews from the press and most importantly has helped him grow in the game of baseball. Even though Harper has his head on his shoulders, he does need a coach like Chambers.

With his support system and a successful start in junior college baseball, Bryce Harper is well on his way to being baseball’s chosen one. It is my educated guess Bryce will do a lot more than be successful in baseball. I am betting he wouldn’t mind helping the Coyotes win a junior college national championship and then help the Nationals win their first World Series. Or at least he would help them not finish in last.

David Olmst has had a passion for the American pastime since he was a child. He has a strong feeling that Bryce Harper will be one of the best major league baseball players to ever play the games. What amazes him most is a Bryce Harper Autograph baseball is already over $200! This is why he made the Bryce Harper baseball site.

Song Lyrics Influence Social Behavior of People

It is a common knowledge that song lyrics actually affect moods and social behavior of people. There was recently a study that determined the effect of certain song lyrics to the social behavior of people. Many people have actually been surprised with the findings of the research. Song lyrics would effectively initiate unintentional attitudes. Thus, many people and organizations could use specific songs with specific categories of lyrics to invoke targeted and intended social behaviors and feelings.

A research was conducted by a sophomore pre-law student of Kansas State University, Eduardo Alvarado. He conducted a practical experiment that looked at possible behaviors that could be elicited from music lyrics of specific songs. Song lyrics combined with appropriate and fitting music could activate specific feelings in the subconscious of people, making them act accordingly with the environment sans deliberate intent. This way, music and song lyrics could be used to intentionally manipulate social behavior.

The study’s major goal was to find out if specific music lyrics could really activate pro-social and anti-social responses among individuals. It sought to prove that pro-social behaviors of empathy and anti-social behaviors like aggression could result from exposure to specific types of song lyrics. Particularly, songs used were patriotic and children-friendly, specifically, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider,’ respectively.

The participants of the research were asked to fill out survey forms that asked questions to find out religion and attitudes toward diversity and other culture. For control purposes, half of the respondents completed the survey forms prior to the lyrics-experiment; while the remaining half did the survey forms post the exercise. The aim of this action is to directly gauge and find out immediate effects of song lyrics to social behaviors.

Preliminary findings of the research showed that song lyrics actually create anti-social and pro-social responses and behaviors among participants. Songs with patriotic lyrics were able to bring about negative behavioral effects to the respondents, as shown by the way they responded to given survey questions that are about diversity and cultures. Overall, such song lyrics effectively made respondents assume prejudice and close mindedness. The researcher observed that once participants assumed a patriotic view of life, they tended to act less empathetically. Those respondents do not put themselves into perspectives of other people.

On the contrary, children’s songs like ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ set neutral behaviors. The respondents showed pro-social behaviors or responses. They exhibited positive behavior and openness to diversity and foreign culture. Such respondents became more empathetic and more accepting, as showed by the way they responded to survey questions.

Organizations, schools, and people could use this knowledge for their own favors. If you are convincing people to accept cultures or diversity, try to expose them first to songs with children’s lyrics. Avoid patriotic songs as lyrics of such music certainly are worded to make people stick to and be impractically loyal to their own nationality and race. Song lyrics are indeed very important. You could strategically use them.

Turn Your Instant Ideas Into Effective Song Lyrics

You might not be aware but there are just too many music composers who are finding it hard to write lyrics for their music. That is the reason why many songs have different melody writers and lyricists. If you are not very good in creating original melodies, you still may take a chance of contributing to music by writing effective and highly creative lyrics.

You do not need to be a master lyricist to be able to come out with good lyrics that would surely fit in perfectly with melodies and tunes. Writing lyrics is just like writing short writing compositions. You may talk about anything you feel like talking about. It could be about any person, about your love, about how you feel, about places, about the seasons, or just about anything you could ever think of.

Are you running out of ideas for your lyrics-writing activity? Here are some practical tips that could guide you become a good lyricist.

-Think about any incident in your life or in the lives of people you know that could be appropriately and effectively discussed in a song. Expert lyricists attest that personal experiences make for better song lyrics.

-If you are always writing lyrics about your personal experiences, why not write lyrics for a song that talk about others’? You might say the words in your own view.

-Some lyrics are best when adhering to specific concepts. If you are writing to produce a concept music album, it would be best if you keep on thinking about usual and profound concepts. Lyrics should not always be about experiences, you know. Many concepts also make good subjects for song lyrics.

-For good melodies, you may write several sets of lyrics before finally choosing the one that fits the bill. It is advisable to rewrite lyrics if you think it is called for. You might not be aware but most songs’ lyrics have been revised and replaced many times before they are finally published and recorded.

-Not too many lyrics talk about events people usually read in magazines and newspapers. But those lyrics really touch hearts. Could you still remember some Michael Jackson songs with heartfelt lyrics talking about famine, degradation of environment, and racial discrimination issues? Take heed.

-Always keep a pen and paper with you. Sometimes, profound words just pop up in the minds of people at uncertain times of the day, at the most unexpected venues. It would help if you could write down your feelings and your descriptions of surroundings. Such words could make good song lyrics.

-Brainstorm with friends, family, and colleagues. Other people might have terrific ideas. There is nothing wrong with drawing thoughts and inspiration from other people. Inspiration and influence are very significant and helpful when it comes to writing of song lyrics.

-Lastly, be original. It would not be advisable plagiarizing other people’s works. Respect intellectual rights especially if you want to always command respect from people over your song lyrics.

Celebrity Century Review

Having just returned from our first Celebrity Cruise aboard the Celebrity Century and I wanted to post a Celebrity Century review that hopefully others can benefit from it.

Some background on our cruising experience. This is our 6th cruise we have taken in the last 20 years so by no means are we what you would call experts. Nor would you call us rookies either. In the past 20 years we have cruised with Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival and Holland (twice). We have been also fortunate enough to attain a financial level where the last 3 cruises have been at the Suite level.

We booked the Celebrity Century out of Miami Florida, as we wanted to take a New Years Eve Cruise. A word of caution if you are looking to take a cruise over any New Year you will want to book very early. For example, the first week of October there were several options on several cruise lines. In the second week of October most all of these choices we gone.

We left the port of Miami on December 30th 2009 and returned January 4th, 2010.

The Good:

In November of 2009, Celebrity launched several “all you can drink” options. These include:

-Water

-Beer

-Frozen Drinks (margarita’s; daiquiri’s, etc)

-Alcohol (house alcohol)

There were four of us in our party and we purchased one water card and one beer card for the four of us. I cannot recommend these cards enough. On the water you get your choice of Evian stilled and Perrigrino Sparkling. You get bottled water at no charge at every bar, every restaurant and all day everyday. These are not the small bottles either – these are the large bottles of water all the way to the 1.5 liter size. During dinner we easily went through 5 bottles a night.

The same goes for the beer card. The beer card gives you every can or bottle of beer at no charge. This includes both domestic and imports. To make the math work on a beer card you need to drink about 6 beers per day. You can only order one beer at a time, but on the pool deck there are 4 bars in the immediate vicinity. At first we simply each took my card to each different bar and ordered a beer. Then one of the waiters came over and asked told us that we did not need to come to the bar because he would make the bar “come to us”. I then told him we were looking for some good service and slipped him a $20 in his pocket. That was it – we never had to make another “beer run” the rest of the cruise. Regardless of the number of beers we wanted – he brought them over and put them on the free card. On every cruise you should always tip your waiter early in cash and I promise you that you will get better service than you ever have had in the past.

A note on tipping. At first I felt a little guilty when the bartender or waiter gave me a bottle of water or beer and the charge slip had zero, but a spot for additional tip. Then I remembered that Celebrity had had 15% to the cost of the card for the gratuity. In essence the gratuity on these drinks was pre-paid.

Also remember to double check your charge slip to make sure the waiter did not charge you. We did have 3 separate incidents where the waiter inadvertently charged us. The good news is as soon as we pointed it out they reversed the charge.

A more professional cruise experience? The cruise on the Celebrity Century felt like it was designed for the more seasoned cruiser. It is highly likely that what I am about to describe is common through out the Celebrity Cruise Line, but since this is my one and only cruise with Celebrity, I can not say this for certain.

Compared to all of the other cruises I have experienced, I never felt “sold to”. Unlike other cruises there was not the constant announcements about a jewelry sale, art auction, bingo game, etc. Our mail box / cabin was also not littered with flyers and coupons reminding us of the same. It was a nice break. This is not to say that Celebrity did not keep us informed about what was happening aboard the Celebrity Century. There were occasional announcements and of course the daily itinerary of events was delivered to our cabin nightly. But if you waited to be told what to do next aboard the Celebrity Century you would have missed out on various activities.

Jamaican Waterfall: This was an excursion in Ocho Rios. If you have the physical ability you should not pass this up. Basically you climb UP a 650′ waterfall. They have guides to take you up the waterfall safely. It is a true one of a kind experience.

The Bad and the Ugly:

Room size: As mentioned earlier we have been blessed with the ability to cruise with a suite the last 3 cruises. 2 aboard Holland and this one on the Celebrity Century. The suite was less than 1/2 the size of a similar suite about Holland and the bathroom was about 1/3rd the size. We traveled with 3 pieces of luggage. One of the pieces would not fit in the bed or in the closet. The room attendant / butler had no alternatives so for 5 days it sat out. So you take a small room to start with and now have a piece of luggage to maneuver around for 5 days.

The Bed: I have slept on more comfortable beds in a college dorm. The are very flat. Even worse was the length. At 6’3′ my feet easily hung over the edge of the bed. I spoke with a gentleman who was under 6′ tall and he said he had the same problem. He was not in a suite so the bed length must correspond with the type of room. My assumption is the beds were short to allow people to walk around them.

Recycling: Non-existent. In this day of being green this was a huge shock and disappointment. Aboard Holland there is a recycling trash can in every room. Not aboard the Celebrity Century. The good news is they gave you less paper to throw out in terms if coupons and flyers, but there is still a good amount that could be and should be recycled. I definitely look on this a negative towards Celebrity Cruise Lines vs. the Celebrity Century. The age of a ship should not dictate whether or not you offer recycling.

The Buffet: The food that was offered was more than plentiful and the quality was fine. However, in the evenings the menu remains the same. If for whatever reason you did not want to eat in the main dining room – the choices were:

-Create your own pasta

-Stir-Fry

-Sushi

-Pizza

It NEVER changed. All of the above is also available at lunch. I have never been on a cruise and have had this experience. I can tell you that about Holland whatever they offer in the main dining room is also offered in the buffet line / cafe.

The Murano: Like all other cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises offers a higher end restaurant you can enjoy for a fee. This fee usually ranges from $25 to $35 per person. Celebrity advertises the Murano as an Italian Theme. It is not like any Italian I have ever seen. For example, I have yet to be offer Fuqua (stuffed goosed liver) in any other Italian restaurant. I would call it a mish mash of French, Italian and seafood. The issue I have with the Murano is not the food but the charge. The left hand of the menu is a 5 course food and wine course. At the bottom of the menu it says there will be an $89 charge if you order this meal!

So with Celebrity you can have higher end within higher end? It is one thing to offer a higher end dining experience aboard an expensive trip already, but to then want to charge an additional $89 for a menu selection is absurd. The night we were there we saw no one order the 5 course meal so I wonder why it is really offered. Perhaps they want to limit the offerings in the Murano and this is a way to do it while still making their menu appear full.

7 Mile Beach Excursion – Grand Cayman: Some might say this is not fair to hold this against Celebrity Cruise or include in a review about the Celebrity Century, but I am well aware that the cruise lines keep a significant portion of the money travelers pay for excursions booked through them. Celebrity Cruises is well aware of what they are charging for.

The 7 Mile Beach Excursion in Grand Cayman is without a doubt the biggest rip-off for an excursion I have ever experienced. For $35 you get:

1. Shuttle bus trip to the 7 Mile Beach (public beach)

2. 1 free drink (watered down rum mixed with Kool-Aid in small plastic cup)

3. 1 lawn chair

And what do you get to experience when you get to the beach? Water, sand and sun! Want an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun? $5 please.. Want to jet ski, parasail, snorkel, etc – better bring your credit card!

For the 4 of us it cost $140 for the above 10-minute bus ride, drink and use of a lawn chair. Take the city bus to the same beach – $2.50 per person. Take a cab ride from the dock to the same beach – $5 each! I understand that in any situation it is buyer beware and you want to be safe on your vacation. There is no amount of money that is worth having my family safe. However in this situation where there is such a disparity in value received versus what the normal fees are – it can be called nothing less than highway robbery. Shame on you Celebrity Cruises for offering this so-called excursion at this price.

Conclusion:

I am sorry to say that the bad and the ugly far outweighed the good on the Celebrity Century. Celebrity does note that the Century ship is the oldest ship in their fleet, but it did have a multi-million dollar upgrade in 2006. Unfortunately what we found disappointing about the cruise had almost nothing to do with the Celebrity Century but rather Celebrity Cruises as a whole. When we got to the airport we took a vote on Celebrity and it was unanimous – none of us will probably be cruising in Celebrity Cruises again.
