It takes a special kind of person to play high school linebacker. Well, maybe not so much special as crazy. We all know the kids that usually play linebacker. They’re a little on edge. You try not to stare into the eyes too long because it’s scary in there. You may not like what you see. There’s a certain personality built for being a prep sport linebacker and it’s usually swirled around in heavy metal, heavy rap, punk, and a few broken noses. If they weren’t playing high school football, there would probably be a lot more damage on the campus. It’s good they’re on the field. Animals are safer. Let’s look at the role of the typical linebacker and at least agree to respect their special “abilities”.

The linebacker is typically the leader of the defense. One, because they’re crazy and everyone’s a little afraid of them but they also sit right in the middle of the defense. You have the lineman right at the line of scrimmage. They’re closest to the action. You also have defensive backs who, as their name implies, are usually set further away. The Line backer is right between the two in a typical defensive set. They generally have a better vantage point than the lineman since they’re set back and upright. They have to communicate to the defensive lineman what they see and typically adjust based on what the offense is trying. The DB’s also take their cues from the linebackers to some extent…especially the Strong Safety who’s usually in the same neighborhood. So what exactly does the prep sport linebacker do when he’s not leading the defense or setting things on fire?

There are two typical roles for the Linebacker. Officially, they are matched up against the running backs. In a perfect world, during a running play, the defensive lineman are all neutralized by the countering offensive players. This usually leaves holes in the line for the running backs to break through. This is where the linebacker needs the toughness we described above. If you’re the linebacker, that running back is usually running straight at you and your responsibility is to meet him at the line and knock him back. See, the lineman get dirty at the line but they’re a few feet apart. You can’t build up to much speed and it usually turns into a wrestling match. The linebacker however, has a large and fast running back coming right at him and he’s had a good 10 yards to build up speed. It’s going to be ugly and you have to be a little bit crazy to want to hit that straight on. That’s the linebacker for you. They basically have to stop a moving train on most running plays. If they don’t, the run play goes from a few yards to 15 real fast. They are the first buttress of defense beyond which, it’s pretty open territory.

The second set is that of a passing offensive play. There are two different options. They can either drop back for pass protection with general responsibility for the middle of the field or they can blitz which is probably a linebacker’s favorite thing to do. On the blitz, they gamble a bit and rush the quarterback. They’re hoping to get him before he can get the pass off. It fits perfectly with their headhunter mentality. See…it’s good in prep football to be a little crazy!

People throw around the term Prep Sports all the time. What exactly are they talking about with that term? Initially, the term “prep” conjures up images of elite schools with funny headmasters that sip tea in argyle sweaters. Judge Smails quickly comes up or maybe the Omega Theta Pi house from Animal House. We’re talking smoking jackets and excessive use of the word “phenomenal”. That’s not what the mean by prep but it’s fun talking about. So if it’s not preppy jerks in collared shirts, what is prep sports.

Prep stands for “preparatory” and what they’re preparing for would have to the pro’s. Essentially, prep sport means anything but pro’s and goes back to when high school and college education was considered “preparatory” for life. It does include high school and college which is interesting. Look, most athletes are not going pro but the name stuck and it now refers to some of the best sports action around. As much as we like the pro’s, nothing has the raw energy of high school sports or the frenetic power of college sports. They’re not getting paid to play..they’re doing it for the love the game and a drive to compete. Let’s first look at High School sports.

High Schools sports is something close to most of our hearts and for people who love sports, that’s probably where the love starts. Age 14-18 is a pretty special period of time in any person’s life. Of course you don’t really realize what you’re in the middle of until after the fact. You look back on the Friday night football games that were THE event of the year. For many high schoolers, the friendships and memories the make on the field, court, or in the locker room are the best ones they have. There’s also something to be said for many high school sport athletes having their time occupied. There’s nothing more dangerous than a 16 year old person with time on his or her time. For a lot of athletes, the structure of practice and games keep them out of juvenile hall. We all know those kids. Without high school football, they probably wouldn’t be there at school. It keeps them grounded and in school.

The next level of prep sports is a little different. College ball gets serious. Players aren’t paid to play but that isn’t to say there isn’t a lot of money riding on the athletic departments at these schools. For some prep sport players at the college level, college is just a proving ground or way station for the pro’s. That’s a small fraction of all the players at that level. For the majority of players, collegiate sports is a way to get into and pay for college. This is a pretty important aspect as it helps to round out the collegiate field of students and gives opportunities to many who would not be able to attend college without athletic scholarships. Everyone has different gifts and being athletic should count as much as being technical, literary, or bright. Prep sports at the college level takes everything up a notch. Have you been to a college football game lately or NCAA basketball tourney?

We all get excited about prep sports whether at the high school or college level. There’s something visceral about sports and nothing brings that home than when it involves our friends, kids, and neighborhood community.

We all know who that kid is. You learn real early not to throw any insults his or her way because you’re just awaking the beast and it’s going to smack you over the head with verbal ferocity. Throw out the occasional call about his goofy shoes and before you’re done, he’s rattle off three different places he taken your mom on a date to and how he thought she was a cheap tipper. You’re stunned for a minute and sit there slack jawed. That didn’t go well as your peers quickly jump on the obvious victor’s bandwagon and offer additional tweaks and barbs at your expense. You learn the lesson very early, don’t mess with someone’s who has learned the Art of Junk Talk and the silvery tongue has no better arena to spit venom than with prep sports. Creativity welcomed Here.

So let’s go through a few pointers…some paint by numbers towards “the Art”. First of all, don’t go cliche. Look, if you’re starting with “2 4 6 8″ then it’s probably best to just remain silent and pantomime. The number counting routine was only cool in elementary school. You need to step up your game and it’s best to avoid tired slogans, chants, and chats. This goes for the “Go Home”‘s, “D Fence”, and the like. Okay..maybe they’re a warm up just to get the pipes moving and keep the moving parts clean (thank you Van Halen) but you can rest on those laurels. Be specific. Something that directly relates to the other high school football team. That brings up to point 2.

You want a chant, chat, or slogan to hit home. For example, I was just at a basketball team and the other team was a wealth prep school The public school had a few chants and chats at the Weekly Faceoff on PrepSportFantasy.com such as “Go Home Rich Kids”. That’s a little better but still pretty marginal. The Prep School response however, was even better. “You’re dads work for our dads”. Whether it was true or appropriate, it was really funny and you could see all the heads in the gym looking to the person next to them with the “WHAT did the say??”. That’s what you need when talking junk. People should literally stop what they’re doing to re-read, re-listen. Every school has some baggage. I don’t care if it’s Mater Dei or Compton. There’s some grist to be found at any high school sport game in the U.S. and your goal is to find it, heighten it, and repackage it in funny. Obviously, don’t go for jugular. Hitting someone when they’re down has the opposite effect.

As the prep sport school channel’s progress, we’ll be watching for the zingers people come up with and we encourage you to email them to us so we can keep a running list of best and worst calls. What amazes us is just how creative our prep sport community is. The crazy players and fans will come up with junk talk that makes us simultaneously blush and laugh. Message received. Success.

When we traditionally think of sports at the high school level, the big three come to mind. Prep Football, Basketball, and Baseball. There’s some serious tradition imparted on these sports which go back decades if not generations. That’s probably part of drives the continued popularity of these sports…Dad’s taking sons to pee wee football, bball, and baseball. That’s only half the story. Although the big three are pretty comfortable in their current positions across U.S. high school athletic departments, a big wave of change has slowly rolled on during the past decade or two. The rise of individual or independent sports. Let’s take a look at what’s coming in the high school sport arena.

In a nutshell, there’s some new kids on the block. The trend has been a decreasing participation rate (per capita) for traditional team sports such as the big three and an increase in interest, time, and participation in what’s loosely called individual sports. This is actually a wide net of different activities but let’s talk about a few and how it’s changing the prep sport world. Now for the purist in high school sports which is probably driven by a person’s age and what they’re familiar with, these may not feel like sports in the traditional sense but try telling that to someone whose world revolves around competition in one of these different sports. You’re going to get bad looks pretty quickly and with good reason. A sport is a sport. If you can complete against others and there’s a level of skill and/or ability needed in order to succeed, then that by definition is a sport. We’re not talking competitive eating here although, you could probably argue for that as well. I personally can’t eat 42 hot dogs without turning white and going into shock. So what activies are we talking about?

Some are a little more obvious and some we’ve been doing since we’re little kids for fun. An example of the obvious would be something like tennis or wrestling. They’ve been around for ever and have actually crossed over into the “mainstream” prep sport segment. Most high schools in the U.S. have a tennis and wrestling team. Also in this “almost there” category would be swimming and golf. Both are pretty prevalent at the high school level. You then start to get into different activities that most schools don’t have competitive teams for. An example would be snowboarding, boxing (probably for obvious liability reasons), or various martial arts which is everything from karate to jujitsu. Obviously, these can be incredibly competitive and it’s very easy to see how they are individual sports at the prep level but you just don’t find a wide availability at an organized level across high schools. There may be clubs for these activities but not school sponsored teams.

Even beyond these individual sports which are halfway there, you have different activities such as ping pong, discus golf, roller derby, and fencing. All have competitive elements in them and all are gaining popularity with today’s youth. So even though we traditionally think of prep sports as football, basketball, and baseball…let’s keep in mind that interest in other individual sports in constantly increasing in popularity at the high school level.

Dennis Jarvis writes about the world of Prep Sports including high school sports such as high school football, basketball, and baseball.

If they’re building chants around in you up in the bleachers and drawing funny little pictures of fences on white poster board then you’re probably pretty important. Defense. Not to sound like your JV high school football coach but it really does win games. It seems like the offensive players always get the recognition for prep football victories. You’ve got the Quarterback strutting around in the backfield. The running backs get the fans out of their seats when they break out past 8 yards and receivers. Don’t even get us started on the receivers who feel fewer hits than my golf balls at driving range (it’s really sad actually). The defense does the dirty work and they really do work as a team…a collective of hard hitting, attack dogs. Let’s talk a little about the un-recognized and unsung hero’s of any high school football team across the U.S…the Defense.

First a quick introduction to the major lines in the sand so to speak that make up the defense. Close up to the action is the Defensive line. When you hear comparisons of football to battle or war, it’s really the action around the line that makes any of those relevant. It’s not that far off from the old battle lines of World War I where each team…er..I mean army would batter each other along a line separating the two. The high school football line isn’t much different since the line (offensive or defensive) that controls that line most likely controls the momentum of the game. The defensive line players use raw strength, quickness, and intuition to do one of two things in general. They either have to fill the holes and manage the offensive lineman’s maneuvers to make sure a sneaky running back doesn’t break their ranks. The other primary concern is to put pressure on the prep football quarterback when he’s looking to pass. If the QB can just sit back there and take his time, that’s not good news for the Defensive backs. The D-line needs to put a little fear into the QB. This is where quickness and agility come into play. That’s a touch request…big, strong, quick, and cagey. We all have them in our schools and most likely they’re on the Defensive line.

Behind the Defensive line of any high school team, you have 2nd wall of defense. These players can step up and fill the holes on the run or they can break down field, generally in the interior, to cover passes. Typically, you have two line backers and they do just that. They are off the line and they must quickly make the “read” and either look to stop the running backs or go into pass protection mode across the middle. They also have to watch for running backs releasing for passes and that pesky tight end but they’re usually a good match for either with a combination of speed, size, and a general attack mode mentality. You’ve got to be a little screwy to be a successful linebacker. A little bit of crazy eyes never hurt. Backing up the Linebackers is probably the strong safety in an average defensive set. He needs to keep an eye on the Tight End and offer general pass protection up field.

Behind the Line backers and strong safety are your defensive backs although the strong safety shares membership in this group as well. You have your corners who are generally glued to receivers or zones of the field depending on the coverage. They also have to occasionally try to tackle running backs on sweeps which is not their favorite task. Way back in the D is the Free Safety. He’s the last line of passing defense. You get past him and it’s probably a touchdown. He’s got deep coverage responsibilities in most sets and he needs to be fast, long, and able to read the intent of the QB pretty well. The buck stops with him. As the final piece, he makes rounds out or various levels or zones of defense in a typical prep sport defensive set. Now we just need posters with D and picture of a fence to make it complete.

It is a well-known fact that most kinds of sports actually help people to get fit and make them feel better at the same time. Indeed, even something as easy as basketball shooting or basketball training can make families come together to enjoy themselves and bond with each other at the same time. Most of us have a natural competitive streak anyway so teaching kids the nuances of the game comes naturally to most parents for sure.

There is certainly more to learning then just the basics though, for most kids since it also teaches them how to play fair and right. In their development they will have to know what is right and what is wrong but having fun while they are learning seems to drive the lesson home quicker. In fact, it is a good idea for the family as a whole to get involved with fun activities so that the kids do not feel that they are being pushed into one particular sport or the other. We all know how defiant kids can get so just giving them the platform to play is often enough to get them interested for life.

Another great life skill which is learned while playing any sport is sharing. By passing the ball from one to another, children learn that they have to share things in life. The whole point of games in general is to win, obviously, but having them pass the ball will show that it is very often the team effort which wins the biggest prize. Any company will know this which is why a good workforce is necessary for a successful company.

When a kid is learning new skills, he will just love the fact that the parent or tutor is praising him when he is doing something right. This too will last him into his later years when he will know how successful he can be by just doing the right thing.

Of course, there are many skills to be learned when playing this game and to this end there are many books and videos available to help people pick up good tips. Sporting stars are often involved in these teaching aids and will spark an interest in those who are great fans of the star.

For example, imagine some great sportsman showing how to hold the ball or dribble in the most effective way. The child or parent will ultimately try to imitate the star since this is what the star has excelled at for some time. Indeed, the natural competition between father and son often is sparked by one liking one superstar while the other supports another. This makes for great fun when they are on the court for sure.

It is important to make sure that the child is not pushed too hard at the beginning. Making this a fun experience is what will allow them to grow and get better in any sport. However, if they can also be helped with teaching aids, they may well go on to take up the sport professionally in future.

Most people these days have some sort of interest in sports. Whether it is playing it or watching it, they often pass on this love of the game to their kids quite inadvertently. Indeed, because of this love of everything sporting, there is an amazing amount of basketball videos and basketball skills manuals on the market to allow people to get into the mechanics of the game from the viewpoint of experts who have played for years.

Shooting a few hoops has probably been done by most American families. The love of the game is such that even a hoop can be found over most garage doors or in the yards of many people these days. The kids love to challenge the parents at this too and this is a good way of letting off steam at the end of any day.

Indeed, since the advent of the computer age, many kids now suffer from childhood obesity which was unheard of in decades gone by. This is surely a huge problem that is being saved up for future generations so doing something about it now seems to be the only way to counter the effects.

In fact, the problem these days is most people do not have time to bond with their kids like they used to. Moms used to stay at home, and dads would come home after five. However, nowadays, it is more likely that both parents have to work and both come home later in the evening so the kids are very much left to their own devices for most of the time.

It may be a good idea then to set some time aside at the weekends when the family can play together as a group so that all the frustrations of the week can be worked out physically instead of bottling it all up. Kids love to play with the parents for sure and the competition can get quite fierce.

Sports activities also teach kids valuable life lessons too. If they have to pass the ball to each other, it is obvious that they will be learning to share. Giving someone else the chance to score too will show that sometimes we have to put the interest of others before ourselves. This unselfishness makes for a well-rounded personality which should be an added bonus when the child grows and has to go to work too.

But perhaps the biggest gain from having fun with the kids brings is that the adults have a chance to be young again. If they buy in the relevant training aids, it gives all the family an opening to discuss the game as well as anything else that may be bothering the kid too. If nothing else, it gets them away from the computer screen for an hour or two and this can only be beneficial for sure. Once someone knows that they are getting better at the game, their confidence soars and this also helps them with other aspects of their life too.

As casinos are being built around the world due to their ease of generating income for the various governments of different countries, more and more innocent victims to gambling are getting caught in the tangle of endless web of problem gambling.

As a professional in the casino gambling arena, I personally would like to help all these victims to prepare themselves or at least see whether they should even venture into the casinos for that pot of gold.

Many a times, a new gambler would feel lucky and enter the casino for a game of chance. The problem with newbies is that they may come out winning a few hundreds to a few thousands and thought that they will forever be that lucky.

The main problem with people who never gamble at casinos before and decided once in their lifetime that they will try their hand at the casinos, is that they cannot see eye to eye with money lost and money won.

And because of that, if they on the first try won a few couple of a hundred bucks, and maybe even a few thousands of dollars for the few lucky ones, it is only a matter of time that they will think about going into the casinos again.

The end point is that they will be lured into the casinos again and again and they will eventually lose everything they have got. That is the strategy of the casinos and it is this which makes the casinos very wealthy – the emotions of greedy people.

Here are some tips to see if you are indeed ready to walk into the casinos and maybe further yourself to become a professional casino player:

If you are overwhelmed at the sight of money lost or money gained, especially if they are in huge amounts, then please don’t make this plunge to try to make a living as a casino professional. You do not have any qualities whatsoever.

If you cannot control your emotions at getting a revenge on the casinos and are easily affected by the environment and the gorgeous people in the casinos, then please leave this industry now.

To take this commitment of professional gambling or rather playing as true casino professionals called our line of work, you must have a very composed and cool mind at all times in and out of the casinos.

Money to you is secondary concern. If it is your primary concern, then you will lose it in the end. The cycle is vicious, do not let this get to you. That is why money must not be your first concern.

Always remove all types of possible ways to draw more money at the casinos. Only bring what you intend to play and have a target of winning amount that is realistic and get out of the casino after that.

Set your losses to such strategy like 3 losing streaks and then stop all play. This kind of mindset puts you in better focus especially if you are winning and suddenly things start to turn around.

Professional casino gambling is not for the with a faint-heart. It is not very glamorous, and at many occasions it is more taxing to the mind and soul of those who truly are professionals. Why? It is due to the fact that you need to be very quick in your thinking and maybe for some games need your calculations and quick eyes and alertness for any loopholes.

All these are done at very distracting situations, for the very fact that the casinos are so beautiful to be in and together with many beautiful women and huge amounts of cash in transaction, and not to forget noisy gamblers and irritating grannies and aunties, you will find yourself very challenging to concentrate what you set out to accomplish.

In the end, it is always the greed and emotional revengeful thoughts that will provoke you to more losses. That is why if you cannot pull all stops to these emotions, it is better for you to just try your luck at simple lottery with just a few dollars to spare.

Mr Knight comes from the casino industry. He wants to prevent those who are not ready to venture there or not ready to become a casino gambling professional to stay out of the casino games for their family sake. For more ventures, go to SECRETS Cheers, Knight

The recession is bad for business, families and our lives in general as it fills us with doom and gloom but is it helping the environment?

As there is less production in the world as we buy less items as we have less money then the International Energy Agency (IEA) have completed a study recently to state that greenhouse gas emissions have fallen drastically as a result of the worlds economic recession. When added to the fact that governments are actively trying to wean us off oil then green house gasses have reduced which decreases any effect on climate change and the ozone layer.

The news is full of companies aiming to become carbon neutral which means balancing their emissions against carbon offsets in green and eco companies such as solar power. In Manchester where I live the National Grid Power company is paying for a housing associations heating system for blocks of flats to become more energy efficient and they are using this amount of carbon saved as an offset for other parts of this business which are bad for the environment. If a business saves people money in this recession and is good for the environment then it is a win win all round.

One problem is that countries have is know how to help poorer developing countries during this recession to cut green house gases and to combat global warming. Bangladesh has rising sea levels and for those of you that can afford it the Maldives and the low lying islands are also worried about this. China, parts of India and many countries in Africa are facing the desert moving into towns and cities but unless the countries have the money for defenses then it will be difficult to stop this.

Rapid economic growth in China, India and Brazil means more cars on the road and greater polluting industries but the recession will have reduced the growth but as the world economy picks up again so will there output.

To push people, businesses and governments in the right direction we need more than a recession we need a fundamental change in attitudes to usage and especially our disposable attitudes. The recessions will have affected the everyday person in the pocket who is likely to think more about re-using food leftovers, driving a smaller car to save on fuel or even use public transport and cut our un necessary journeys. Instead of buying new clothes at a monthly rate will be making them last that bit longer before condemning them to the recycle bin or even selling the clothes and unwanted items as car boot sales or on ebay.

Increasingly people are growing their own food as concerns about pesticides are the increasing cost of food make it more attractive and even a family day even when looking after their pride and joy onions, carrots and potatoes. You should try using a slow cooker or one pot cooking as meals can be made extremely cheap as opposed to pre made frozen food which is quicker to cook.

The UK and USA governments are urging us to spend our way out of the recession yet when people lose jobs or suffer from ill health the welfare safety net is not always what people think it is. Im doing as I always do and save a bit month for worst case scenarios in this recession and in life and by saving you are not spending on items which have a cost to the environment and planet.

If I do have to spend I spend on green, ethical and fairtrade companies were possible as by voting with my wallet I can have a greater impact on the world around me.

Are you looking for a company to help turn your house green and save you money in the long run? If so Bricks and Pieces can help you by showing you the green alternative when building your extension or conversion.
